Key Practice Areas

AREAS OF FOCUS / PRACTICE AREA

The Institute’s work tackles a range of specific socio-economic, political, and development topics/issues within the region, grouped across wider themes which cover the breadth of its expertise. They are as follows:

Governance and Democracy:

We promote democratic values and good governance through policy analysis and public engagement. Our focus includes fair elections, independent media, transparency, and human rights. We publish briefs, reports, podcasts, and organize high-level dialogues. Collaborations include county governments and organizations like FCDC.

Peace and Security:

Northern Kenya faces ethnic conflicts, cattle rustling, and arms trafficking fueled by climate change. We research these security issues with local insight and regional understanding. By working with peace agencies, we offer data-driven solutions. Our goal is to promote reconciliation, peacebuilding, and post-conflict recovery.

Environment and Climate Change:

Pastoralist communities in ASAL regions face worsening climate crises and ecological degradation. We aim to build resilient societies through research on climate risks and solutions. Our work supports sustainable governance and local production systems. We collaborate with partners to implement adaptation and mitigation strategies.

Socio-Economic Development and Trade:

We explore social and economic behaviors, trade data, and development opportunities. Our research informs policies that unlock the region’s economic potential. We aim to strengthen access to social services and infrastructure. Partnering with key stakeholders, we foster inclusive regional growth.
